Ferrari nearly brought back pop-up headlights with the 849 Testarossa

In today’s world of slim LED headlights and strict regulations, the idea of pop-up headlights feels impossible. Yet, Ferrari seriously considered bringing them back with the 849 Testarossa.

According to lead designer Jason Furtado, the team explored reviving the feature, studying icons like the Ferrari 512 BB, 288 GTO, F40, and F355. These cars didn’t just use pop-ups, they made them unforgettable.

Today’s global regulations are far stricter. Safety and pedestrian protection standards in markets such as the United States and China make complex, moving headlight mechanisms difficult to homologate. Designing a car that satisfies all regions simultaneously ultimately ruled the idea out.

The Ferrari 849 Testarossa features a slim, full-width black light bar stretching across the nose. The design mimics the visual effect of classic pop-up headlights in their closed position. Now, isn’t that clever design?

This “bridge” design can also be seen on newer models like the Ferrari 12Cilindri. It does more than just give a reference to the past. It enhances the car’s identity, visually widens the front end, and integrates neatly with the aerodynamic elements below.
